SOMETIMES.
Life is not like being at your parent’s house where everyone implores you to “finish your cereal” or “eat your vegetables”.
You may have grown up with everyone clapping their hands when you took your first step as a baby. Everyone rushed to see if you were ok offering encouraging words when you fell and hit your head. after taking your first baby steps. She said “Mama”, she said “Papa”, they chorused joyfully at your first words. Wake up. That is not real life.
In life, there are no “participation trophies, or also ran medals handed out.”

Life is hard and interesting.
Life is tough and unpredictable.
It can be rough but rewarding.
It’s physical and spiritual.
It can be your friend in the morning and behave like an enemy in the evening.
A night of a thousand laughs may give birth to a morning of a million sorrows.
One day, I witnessed an odd situation. I went to conduct a burial in a compound and on getting there, someone was getting married. I mean mourners sitting next to celebrants. The scent of loss and lillies prevaded the air.
Solemn music playing amidst joyful chaos. This was life at its incongruos best.

Imagine:
A day for festivity and a day for solemnity.
A day of joy and a day of mourning.
One minute you are smiling, the next you are shedding tears.
That is life at its best and life at its worst.
You don’t cherry-pick, it is handed to you.
You might wake up feeling like everything is against you. I mean the dog died, the car won’t start, an inconsiderate bike rider splashes mud on your clothes and then hurls curses at you as he speeds away leaving you bemused and perplexed while standing for hours at the roadside without getting a vehicle to take you to an important business meeting where you need to close a deal you’ve been working on for months. And of all days you can’t get transportation Finally you get one but you are sitting next to a man with bad breath, and body odor who wants to chat. While trying to be polite when you feel like screaming “Shut up and leave me alone”, the bus runs into a bad traffic jam. Someone is being buried and the burial procession of somber people passes by.
Why why,? No one answers as you asked nobody in particular.
Finally, you alight drenched in sweat from the stuffy bus but glad you free from the pesky passenger who now wants your phone number………you know the rest. Anyway, you finally make it to the meeting only to find out that the venue has been moved to a hotel just a stone’s throw away from your house. Your colleague had been trying to call you all morning, but your phone’s battery died because your son played games on it the previous night and forgot to charge it. You tell yourself you will deal with him later, but the bigger problem is, you have no money. You forgot your purse in the car, and what’s in your handbag isn’t enough to get you back home.
Anger, threats, tears, questions?
Self-talk, no ready answers.
Why is life so unfair? No answer.
What have I done wrong to deserve this? No answer.
Life gives no explanations and grants no press interviews.
So, here’s the deal:
The Marines are not coming to rescue you.
Nobody is coming. That’s right, no knight in shining armor, no fairy, no genie, and certainly not even the Boys Scouts is coming. It’s all on you, champ!
So, what do you do?
Like David in the Bible, when there is no Divine pep squad, no one to encourage you except your silent shadow, you must “encourage yourself in the Lord”. David became his own life coach, cheerleader, and water boy.
Now the good news: You’re more than capable. You’ve got a heart of gold, a resolute spirit, nerves of steel, and you are no quitter.
So, next time you’re feeling down, remember that sometimes in life, you need to –

Sometimes, hug yourself.
Sometimes, shake your hands by yourself
Sometimes, high-five yourself
Sometimes, thump your chest and validate yourself.
Sometimes, just smile at yourself.
Sometimes, you salute yourself.
Sometimes, you fist-bump yourself
Sometimes, look in the mirror and say, fine girl.
Sometimes, you blow kisses to yourself . Pat yourself and say, well done. Stop waiting for someone to pick you up.
When life makes you an offer and commands you not to refuse it, you alchemize the situation.
You make lemonade out of lemons.
So, smell the coffee, lace up, head up, chest out, eyes locked on the victory target, then get out there and become your own superhero.
SOMETIMES IN LIFE, SELF-RESCUE IS THE ONLY RESCUE.
IT STARTS WHEN YOU REALIZE NO ONE IS COMING.
SELAH.
