#Metoo; Has this happened to you too?

Sex for marks and sex for promotion is an evil that should not be encouraged anywhere at all. A lot of the victims of this sad acts have not gotten justice. I wrote this poem just to lend my support to millions of women out there who have experienced all “manner of things” as they pursued their careers, education and other life endeavours. Kudos to Tarana Burke who started the #Metoo movement and to all the individuals, organizations, institutions, etc who have been involved in the forefront of the “fight“.

#Metoo; Has this happened to you too?

I have been fondled, groped, raped, abused and dumped

By men of trust who traded sex for marks and promotion

Betraying their oaths, they became shameless he-goats mounting their mother’s and daughter’s

I’m told it was my fault for being too “busty”, “shapely” and “walking too rhythmically“.

I am a story no one believes, my pain is speaking, no one listening

I have feelings, I am not just a mishmash of hips, lips, breasts and behind

I am not a thing to be picked when the rivers of lust overflow their banks

I am a woman, I guess, that should mean I am human.

Stop complaining “you are lucky to be married”

“Solving everyone’s problem is your call”; so I kept on working

Now the heat from suppressed words is melting up my heart

I wasn’t told I had become a hireling when the dowry was paid.

School runs, kids to the bed, exhausted, now I can rest

Dinner is burnt, Oh my God; what do I do

Please Lord, make him

understand this was a mistake

Lest I hear, “what exactly do you do all day long”?

Another day, rose up early, vacuuming, multi-tasking in beast mode

Eventide comes, aching back, numb all over, I changed into my lingerie

These days “I sleep through it” but he doesn’t “know it”

Tomorrow morning, apply makeup, continue my “made-up” life.

Feeling low today, I don’t want to do the dishes or go to the market

Two weeks unwashed laundry daring me to my face

I don’t want to sleep with you, just let me be with you

I must rest before I lose the rest of myself.

Tell the Sapiens that I will not be like my silenced mothers

Who they oppressed from full breasts till everything went south

Where silence is golden, the victim dies like a villain

Justice must prevail whether you call me a whore or a witch.
