Masked men everywhere
Jacob’s voice, Esau’s hands
Welcome to the land of masked
Where reality is dead and deceit is alive.

We smile when we ought to be crying
We laugh when we ought to be mourning
The deceiver and the deceived
Saying it’s well when it’s not well.

Now we dream of ghosts and ghouls
Ghosts of suppressed emotions and distracted feelings
It’s only a nightmare the experts counseled
Alas, another mask for the deluded.

Money and glamour on the outside
Loneliness and gloom on the inside
Somebody “help me” the perishing soul cries
Shut up, put a mask of laughter on those tears.

You are rich, you ought to be happy
Many don’t have what you have
Cars, houses, women, wine
Dead man walking, but nobody cares.

Marital sorrow masquerading as marital bliss
Eden before, Gomorrah now
Place a mask on it is the name of the game
Repackage your sorrow by calling it joy.

Masks have turned the wise into hooded fools
Mirth and grief in strange coexistence What then is the benefit of wisdom. If the wise dies a fool’s death.

Selah.

To add to the obvious, those that actually express their emotion and reject the mask are seen as fools. This poem just hit the problem of Nigeria on the head. Let us take the mask off.

Most people feel the mask is better than unmasking your emotions for everyone to avoid been mocked or otherwise. God help us.

It’s time to take off the mask, face reality, seek God’s help and man’s help.

This is the era of masking which make several individuals to pretend to be omnipresent, whereby they are the enemy of the community that hinders growth
